This player is usually in charge of running the offensive players and plays. He usually is the one who runs the plays when in a huddle. Halfback This player lines up in the backfield and is responsible for carrying the ball on all the run plays. He is also used as a receiver at times. Fullback This player lines up in the offensive backfield and is usually responsible for run-blocking for the halfback. They are usually bigger than the halfback. Wide receiver This player lines up on or near the scrimmage line. His main job is to catch the ball the quarter back throws. Tight End This player serves as a receiver and a blocker. The tight end lines up beside the offensive tackle, to the left or right of the quarter back. Offensive Tackle This player is a member of the offensive line. On every play there are two tackles. They line up on the outside of the offensive guards. Offensive Guards There are two guards on every play, they line up on either side of the offensive center. Center This player hikes the ball to the quarter back at every play. This player lines up on the offensive line. Defensive End A defensive player who lines up at the end of the defensive line. The job of the defensive end is to contain the running back on the running plays to the outside, and rush the quarter back on passing plays. Defense Tackle A defense player who lines up on the interior of the defense line. The duties of the defensive tackle include stopping the running back on running plays, getting pressure up the middle on passing plays, and occupying blockers so the linebackers can roam free. Nose Tackle The defensive player who lines up directly across from the center, also known as the nose guard. The responsibilities of the nose tackle are to occupy the offensive lineman to keep them from blocking the linebackers. Linebacker A defensive player who lines up behind the defensive lineman and in the front of the defensive backfield. The linebackers are the teams second line of defense. Corner Back A defensive back that generally lines up on the outside of the formation and is usually assigned to cover a wide receiver. Safety A defensive back who lines up in the secondary between, but generally deeper than the corner backs.
